MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Colin Garner - BA(Hons) MUSIC WITH RELATED ARTS

Colin has been involved in brass banding for over four decades as both a player and conductor.

Colin commented recently that '...my musical grounding was established almost exclusively as a result of lifetime learning from mentor and my father, the late Wesley Garner'

As a musician Colin played with Solent Concert band, which Wesley Garner founded and directed in 1969. Colin explains that the Solent Concert Band made tremendous strides in its short history and gained championship status in 1979. It appeared in the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall in 1978, 1980 and 1981. The band won the 44th open Brass Band Festival 1981 and 3rd place at its first appearance for the Grand Shield at Belle Vue.  The band were always in demand for radio broadcasts for BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3 and Radio Solent and Radio Victory.

"We always enjoyed playing on Friday Night Is Music Night. After school it was a trip up to London. We were the only youth band competing in the Championship section of British Brass Bands. We won an extraordinary number special trophies, awards and championships both in England and Europe, including quartets, septets and solo competitions. I have toured USA, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland and Prague".

"It has been a true roller-coaster ride. The rest is history... "
